چکیده

We report a simple and general procedure to create arrays of atomically flat terraces on single crystal surfaces. Facets of three-dimensional (3D) metal islands formed after hetero-epitaxial growth are often flat and, through annealing or growth at elevated temperature, the formation of rather large (micron-scale) atomically flat-top facets can be promoted. We find that the step-free nature of top facets on such islands can be transferred to the substrate surface through room-temperature ion-sputter etching, followed by an annealing step. We use low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) for in situ monitoring of the process steps while fabricating arrays of step-free surface regions on W(110), Ru(0001), Cu(100), and Fe(100) single crystals.

Preparation of atomically flat surfaces on silicon carbide using hydrogen etching

Hydrogen etching of 6Hand 4H-SiC(0001) surfaces is studied. The aspolished substrates contain a large number of scratches arising from the polishing process which are eliminated by hydrogen etching. Etching is carried out in a flow of hydrogen gas at atmospheric pressure and temperatures around 1600-1700 C attained on a tantalum strip heater. Post-etching atomic force microscopy (AFM) images sh...

Optically transparent Au{111} substrates: flat gold nanoparticle platforms for high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy.

We demonstrate a new type of Au{111} substrate that is both atomically flat and optically transparent, which consists of solution-grown flat gold nanoparticles (FGNPs) deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass. We show that FGNPs are atomically flat single-crystal plates with large {111} faces that expose only 2-4 atomic layers. These FGNPs are excellent platforms for alkanethiol self-as...

Surface properties of atomically flat poly-crystalline SrTiO3

Comparison between single- and the poly-crystalline structures provides essential information on the role of long-range translational symmetry and grain boundaries. In particular, by comparing single- and poly-crystalline transition metal oxides (TMOs), one can study intriguing physical phenomena such as electronic and ionic conduction at the grain boundaries, phonon propagation, and various do...

A twin-free single-crystal Ag nanoplate plasmonic platform: hybridization of the optical nano-antenna and surface plasmon active surface.

Surface plasmons based on metallic nanostructures enable light manipulation beyond the optical diffraction limit. We have epitaxially synthesized twin-free single-crystal Ag nanoplates on SrTiO3 substrates. Unlike the nanoplates synthesized in a solution phase, these nanoplates have perfectly clean surfaces as well as a quite large size of tens of micrometers. As-synthesized defect-free single-...

Conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterointerfaces on atomically-flat substrates prepared by deionized-water

We have investigated how the recently-developed water-leaching method for atomically-flat SrTiO3 (STO) substrates affects the transport properties of LaAlO3 (LAO) and STO heterointerfaces. Using pulsed laser deposition at identical growth conditions, we have synthesized epitaxial LAO thin-films on two different STO substrates, which are prepared by water-leaching and buffered hydrofluoric acid ...
